Communication is a two way process which sends a message to people and makes sure that the message sent are being understood by people who receives it because if not it means that communication is not successful or it failed to send a particular message. In health and social care, effective communication is very important because it is the way where different care professionals and service users could point out the important things needed and say what are their needs or if there any complaints, by this to provide the best standard of care to service users by the carers. Communication is also important in health and social care because it develops positive relationship with people using services and their families and friends. It also develops positive relationship with work colleagues and other professionals. By this, it enables everyone to share information with service users, by providing and receiving information.

There are different contexts in communication. It can be a one-to-one communication or a group communication. One-to-one communication means one person communicating with another person with no other people joining in. In health and social care, one-to-one communication could be observed in many ways. For example, if a manager or senior carer of a care home is giving supervision for one of the carer. Supervision should be private; it means they should have their communication in a private place like in the office with just the two of them. Another example is a carer assisting a service user with his or her personal care. This is an one-to-one communication because no other people should be involve because if other people is going to get involve like other service user is present, privacy and dignity has taken away from the service user who needs the assistance. Sometimes two carers are needed to assist one service user. Another good example of one-to-one communication is when someone is going to have an interview. Most of the time in any one-to-one communication, it is important to create the right feeling by being friendly and showing interest in and respect for other person. The conversation needs a start, e.g. “hi”, a middle, when you both discuss what you need to talk about, and an ending e.g. “see you later”. One-to-one communication has different advantages that benefit the two people involve. These advantages could are: It allows attention to be given to one person, it could be more comfortable to share personal information, it allows feedback to specific questions and confidentiality likely to be maintained. Though there are advantages there could be disadvantages as well like: The quality of interaction depends on expertise of the person giving one-to-one, can feel uncomfortable with specific attention, preparation is important to give informative answers to questions and interactions can be misunderstood unless it is clarified by the other person.

Group communication is the context of communication. Group communication means more than two people are involve in the communication. It is also about sharing views or information to few people at once. For example, when finding solution, talking about new policies and new practice shared often in team meetings in health and social care sector. Another example is when carers are attending trainings to enable them to gain more knowledge and refresh things. In my experience, when we are going to have a particular training, all the carers that needs to renew a particular training needs to attend that where all of us will get together and a speaker will be present to do the training and talk it about and ask our opinions and things that we know. Another example is staff meeting, most of the time, manager is the leader and all the staff will listen and if there any questions or opinions that needs to say the manager will listen.
