Improvement in Investment Climate for Attracting Foreign Direct Investment: The Case of Thailand

I. Introduction
Many countries around the world, especially those developing countries are desired to attract the foreign direct investment (FDI); they understand that FDI can help their countries’ economic growth, and not only that – they also bring the new technology into the host country, as well as the physical capital, management skill transferred, and market expansion through FDI inflows. These may return in capital flow and new technical skill to host country labors.

By understand these opportunities, most countries like Thailand is working really hard in order to improve their country investment climate for attracting the FDI. As result, for many years that FDI has become an important element to distribute the economic development in Thailand.

With the reported of the EconomyWatch official website has stated that FDI in Thailand has picked up in the recent years with the advent of a number of international companies in the South-East Asian country. Nissan, which is among the leading car manufacturers of Japan, has already declared that it would invest 20 million yens. This investment is supposed to be made into Siam Nissan Automobile Co. that is the Thailand subsidiary of Nissan. However, previously the Thai Prime Minister (PM), Mr. Samak Sundaravej had stated that his new government would make sincere efforts to do away with the restrictions that had been placed on the capital inflow coming from outside Thailand (EconomyWatch, Jun 2010). Recently, according to the report of Board of Investment (BOI), PM Yingluck Shinawatra’s roadshows during her overseas visits in 2012 could draw 31 projects of foreign investments in Thailand, worth 137,770 million Baht (approximately US$ 4,333 million).
