For hundreds of years the upper class of society have indulged in lavish extravaganzas of gourmet foods as forms of celebration, mourning and just plain living; However, did these lavish beings, or even us mere mortals in the middle class, ever think about what exactly we are eating? Everybody should grow more of their own food because it can help you save money, increase the overall health of your family in numerous ways and the additional benefit of growing your own food having become fashionable in recent years. Everyone should grow more of their own food because it is an easy money saver. Growing your own food helps to save money because “your grocery bill will shrink as you begin to stock your pantry with fresh produce from your backyard.”1 With a recommended 5 servings of fruit and vegetables per day2 and produce prices going through the roof, there has never been a better time to invest in an inexpensive packet of seeds for a vegie garden and enjoy high quality produce, with the added incentive of saving hundreds of dollars per year. Studies3 have shown that on average a family spends just $70 on a garden that produces an estimated $600 of produce; that’s a return of over 800%! Why would you spend your hard earned money on buying food that has been handled by complete strangers and sprayed with who knows what, when you could enhance the wellbeing of your family with fresh, tasty produce from your own backyard? Growing more of your own food can increase the overall health of your family. Fresh produce will be readily available, you will know exactly where your food comes from and gardening will help the whole family stay active. Growing and storing an abundance of fresh produce in great variety can easily become a realistic way of keeping you and your family healthy.
